What is PLA?

Many of our natural toys- and all of our Apple Park soft toys are filled with PLA (Polylactic Acid), also known as “corn fibre.”
It’s made from plant-based sugars derived from crops such as corn, sugarcane and cassava, then carefully processed into a soft, resilient fibre.

A much safer alternative to polyester

Most soft toys including leading brands like Jellycat are covered in and full of “polyester” — a crude oil – petroleum-based plastic.
We wanted to offer PLA as a more thoughtful option.

• Made from renewable plant sources

• Lower environmental impact to produce than conventional plastics

• Soft, durable and suitable for everyday play

⸻

Is it fully natural?

Not entirely.

While PLA begins with, and is made from plants, it is transformed into a bioplastic fibre. So it isn’t the same as truly natural fillings like wool or organic cotton.

We believe it’s important to be clear about this.

⸻

End of life

PLA is designed to break down under specific composting conditions (such as industrial composting with heat and moisture). In everyday use, it remains stable and long-lasting.

⸻

Why we include it

For those looking for low-tox options especially for very young children, we are doing all we can to move away from stocking toys with conventional plastics.
PLA offers a more mindful middle ground — balancing practicality, softness and a reduced reliance on petroleum-based materials.
